first step

Choose your genre. Decide what to teach and go from there.

What subjects or topics do you love? What drives you to take the stage to lead a classroom: art, music, science, mathematics? Who do you want to teach: young children or adolescents?

High School Students

Are you still in high school?

Talk to your guidance counselor about your interest in teaching. Ask your favorite teachers what made them decide to become teachers and how they did it.

Ask your guidance counselor about the Teachers for Tomorrow program. If your school participates in this program, sign up for the Teacher Cadet course. The Teacher Cadet program is growing every year, so ask if your school is participating. Download a video on the Teachers for Tomorrow program here.

College Students

Are you in college now?

If so, you are well on your way to getting ready for teaching. You will need at least a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university. The Virginia Department of Education has many approved college and university teacher education programs from which to choose.

And don't forget that Virginia's community colleges offer teacher preparation programs and guarantee admission to many of Virginia's four-year colleges and universities.
